Pictures Terry took while she was helping with the clean-up effort at Oakhill Day School after Friday’s early morning tornado.
The Oakhill library was exposed to the storm after an F-2 tornado moved over the school at 2:10 a.m. Friday morning. Here you can see the daylight pouring through the roof, and the bowed ceiling panels - several of which had already collapsed onto the library floor due to the weight of the water.
It was so hard working in the library on Friday: Most, if not all of the 40,000 (?) books were purchased and donated by parents over the course of several years. Sadly, we lost over half of them due to water damage. All of the books you see in this shot were wet or too damp to salvage.
Another shot of all the books we were going to have to leave behind. This was part of the fiction section. Located in the center of the library, this aisle seemed to yield the most dry books - the other two aisles fared much worse. In fact, nearly all of the books on the first aisle -- including nearly the entirety of the reference collection -- were lost.
Another shot of the hole in the roof. It's actually located over the facilities office -- where, among other things, the schools' computer server is located. Pictures of that further on...
The first aisle of books in the now ruined Oakhill library. Again, nearly all of the books on this first aisle were ruined. You can still see water ponding in the fluorescent light panel in the ceiling. The carpets were soaked beneath our feet - a squishy mess of ruined carpet, insulation, and soggy ceiling panels. The air was heavy with the smell of mildew.
The Technology Center was also a total loss. We had to replace all of the computers in this room a couple of years ago due to lightning. Now, we've lost them all again.
This is the room above which the roof peeled open, exposing the library, computer center, and the school billing/accounting office to the storm. As I type this, I'm realizing that I'm not certain what this room was used for. As well as being a general facility room, I believe that this is also the room where the schools' server was located.
